Our process

  1. Survey and levels

    Existing levels, slope and where water currently runs - which shapes the design more than any aesthetic choice.

  2. Design

    Layout and materials chosen with the drainage strategy already resolved.

  3. Excavation and base

    Dug, compacted and built in layers. This decides whether the surface is still level in ten years.

  4. Installation

    Pavers, stone or concrete laid, cut and set with edge restraint where required.

  5. Finishing

    Jointing, sealing where appropriate, and a check that water goes where it was designed to.

What this means in Woodland Hills

Slope is the Valley difference. A great many lots here sit on a grade, and any meaningful terrace means retaining something. Retaining walls above a modest height are engineered structures requiring drawings, drainage behind the wall and a permit - not landscape features. Skipping that is how walls bulge and fail a few winters later.

Rain arrives all at once. Months of dry ground then a winter storm produces fast runoff over hard surfaces, and on a slope that water gains energy. Drainage has to be designed for the storm rather than the average, and it has to discharge somewhere legitimate rather than onto the neighbour below.

Heat decides materials. Dark stone and standard concrete get genuinely unpleasant underfoot around a Valley pool in August, so surface temperature is a real selection criterion. Expansion jointing also matters more here, because the daily temperature swing works on large paved areas year-round.

Do retaining walls need a permit?

Above a modest height, yes, and they need engineering and proper drainage behind them. On a slope this is not optional - an under-designed wall fails, usually in the wettest month.

Pavers or poured concrete?

Pavers can be lifted and relaid, which suits ground that moves and roots that lift. Concrete gives a cleaner monolithic look. Both work when the base is right.

Why did my last patio crack?

Usually the base, or missing expansion jointing. Uncompacted fill and no drainage strategy will fail any surface material, however good it looked when new.
