Water is the governing constraint and it is not going away. Designing to a realistic water budget from the start - native and Mediterranean planting, mulched beds, efficient drip and a smart controller - produces a garden that survives restriction years without looking abandoned. Retrofitting a thirsty garden into compliance is the harder path.

Canyon parcels bring brush management obligations. Vegetation within a set distance of the structure has to be managed to reduce fire risk, which shapes what can be planted where and how it is maintained. Designed in from the start, it is barely a constraint; retrofitted, it can mean removing established planting.

Slope and erosion are the third piece. On graded and canyon-edge lots, bare soil moves in the first real storm, so ground cover, planting and drainage are doing structural work as much as visual work.

Does water-wise mean gravel and cactus?

No. The Mediterranean and California native palette is broad and can be lush and layered. It just asks for planting chosen for the climate.

What is brush management?

Managing vegetation within a set distance of a structure to reduce fire risk. On canyon parcels it is an obligation, and it works best designed in from the start.

Can you design around existing mature trees?

Usually, and often you should - mature canopy is valuable and slow to replace. We assess condition and species first.
